Ingrown Hair Removal

Ingrown hairs occur when a hair grows back into the skin, sometimes causing a red lump called a 'razor bump'. The hair follicle may become infected as a result. Ingrown hairs can appear anywhere on the body, but are generally associated with shaving or waxing. They occur more often in people with curly hair.

Ingrown hair removal is relatively simple using tweezers. Wash the affected area with warm water and soap in order to soften the skin, then gently  rub the skin with cotton wool soaked in a little alcohol. Using sterilized tweezers, pull the ingrown end of the hair out of the skin – it’s considered better not to try and pluck the hair out completely. If the ingrown hair is very close to the surface of the skin, it might be easier to use a sterilized needle instead of tweezers. After you’ve removed the ingrowing hair, apply a little antiseptic cream to the area to protect against infection.

Preventing Ingrowing Hairs

There are several steps you can take to prevent ingrowing hairs from appearing in the first place. Regular exfoliation with a gentle face scrubbing product will remove dead skin cells and unblock follicles, allowing the hair to grown normally. If you shave, then avoid shaving too closely and don’t shave against the direction of growth.
